Arup India’s former Managing Director, Nigel Austin joins Create as a Technical Director

Nigel Austin joined Create in late 2023 to help our clients tackle Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), which has received national attention recently after two schools’ roofs collapsed due to inadequate bearing following some structural alterations made by the schools. Over the past six months, Nigel has carried out surveys and completed detailed reports which have allowed clients to safely replace or mitigate the risks of RAAC. We are delighted to announce that he will now take on a permanent, expanded role as a Technical Director working across our ten disciplines.

A consummate professional, Nigel has a distinguished international career in engineering and project management, spanning over 30 years. He has delivered unique and challenging projects for clients across various industries and geographies that include UK, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong and China.

Nigel’s career as a Structural Engineer began at Arup in 1989. He fulfilled a number of roles whilst there, ranging from Resident Engineer and Project Manager to Associate and Technical Director. He was based in London but also did stints in the Channel Islands. In 2006 he became a Vice President for Morgan Stanley Asia, where he held the role of Regional Head of Property Management. During this time Nigel was responsible for Morgan Stanley Asia’s successful relocation from Central to ICC Tower in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

In 2008 he was tasked with establishing Arup India, a role which would see him hold the role of Managing Director for 11 years ending in 2019. During this time Nigel was also the registered Corporate Director with the Indian Government Ministry of Corporate Affairs. In recent years Nigel has relocated to the UK, where he has mostly held advisory roles in the built-environment.

Nigel is well known for his attention to detail and diligence, he is able to bring clarity and strategic direction to complex issues which will no doubt greatly benefit our team and clients. He will use his extensive industry experience to advise on project and bid management, business operations and development opportunities.
